The Program
The Benedictine Consortium for Distance Learning began in 1994. We were convinced of the importance of formation in Benedictine tradition and aware of a growing interest in monastic studies. We realized that the experts in monastic studies are scattered around the country and so are the potential students. Hence, we put to together a list of courses for which we had teachers and for which we thought there might be a need in monasteries. The list has grown as formation directors and others made known their needs and as qualified teachers have signed on. More than 200 students, including oblates, lay students, and non-Catholic monastics have enrolled in the program. Syllabi have been adapted to Third World needs and made available to monasteries there without cost. Group rates have been introduced. tuition costs have been kept at an affordable level. |
Non-credit students work at their own academic level. They also work at their
own pace and have a year to complete a course. We have tried to pick readings that are
easily available. If students need to borrow a book or article, all readings are available on
loan from the coordinator or the instructor. Each course amounts to about two (15 week)
semester hours of college work (90 hours of student work). Most of courses may be
taken for credit granted by the University of Mary. Cost per two-semester hour course is
$150 non-credit, $300. for credit. For further information or to register contact Fr.
