Achard of Saint Victor: WORKS
Edited and Translated by Fr. Hugh Feiss, OSB
Blessed Achard of Saint Victor (1177) was magister and second
abbot of the community of regular canons at Saint Victor in Paris, and
later bishop of Avranches. Lesser known than his brethren Hugh,
Richard, and Andrew, Achard was a theologian a spiritual guide, a
brilliant preacher and an astute churchman, at a time when it was still
possible for someone to be all these at once. His surviving sermons
and theological works are now available in a single collection and we
are in a position to appreciate the breadth of his knowledge and the
keenness of his mind, which was equally at home in traditional
monastic theology and in the emerging scholastic theology and
metaphysics of the mid-twelfth century.
Hugh Bernard Feiss, OSB, is a monk at the Monastery of the Ascension
in Jerome, Idaho. Having earned licentiates in theology and philosophy
at The Catholic University of America and an STD from the
Anselmianum in Rome, he has previously translated the Works of
Peter of CeIIe. His recent works include
Essential Monastic Wisdom, Two Latin Lives of St. Winefride
and Heaven in the Theology of Hugh
Achard and Richard of St Victor, in Imaging Heaven in the Middle
Ages, edited by Jan Emerson and Hugh Feiss.

Monastery Of The Ascension: An Early History
Fr. Simeon Van de Voord, OSB
I am grateful to Father Simeon for
recording his memories of the early
years of our monastery.
But an even
greater debt of gratitude goes to him
for the whole hearted giving of himself
through those early years.
His energy
and enthusiasm for the tasks are
clearly evident in his written memoirs.
The continued blessings that are ours
have surely had a foundation in the
good work he did and, in many ways,
continues to do.
--Fr. Boniface Lautz, OSB Prior

Peter Of Celle: Selected Works
Edited and Translated by Fr. Hugh Feiss, OSB
A busy abbot and advocate of church reform, Peter of Celle held
high offices in the Church for over three decades and carried on a
correspondence with most of the outstanding men of his day -
Thomas Becket, John of Salisbury, and Alexander III among
them. His obvious aptitude for leadership was balanced by his
desire for prayer, and a contemporary considered him one of the
two "learned and prudent men who are without doubt far outstanding
above the other abbots of their land and order in integrity and religion".
An admirer of the new, reformed monastic orders - the Carthusians
and Cistercians - Peter was also a champion of the traditional
(benedictine) monasticism which formed him and whose piety,
discipline, and liturgical life are reflected in his surviving treatises,
letters and sermons.
This selection of Peter of Celle's works has been translated by
another benedictine monk, Hugh Feiss of Mount Angel Abbey,
in the hope that it will cast light on the spirituality of the Black
Monks in the late twelfth century and will spur interest in the
works and thought of this remarkable abbot-bishop.
