The Benedictine Consortium for Distance Learning was established in 1994 by a group of
Benedictine scholars concerned about the formation needs of Benedictine communities,
especially smaller and more isolated monasteries. The primary goal was to link
Benedictine scholars with particular expertise in monastic studies and related topics with
students in formation programs elsewhere, using print or electronic means. The number
of those involved in the program has increased steadily. From the beginning we intended
to include all branches of Benedictines and Cistercians and non-Roman Catholic monastics
as well. The program has expanded to include a few oblates as well. We include courses
which are not technically monastic studies if there is a need for such courses in our
monasteries.
The Benedictine Consortium for Distance Learning is governed by a board of five constituted by the original teachers involved in setting up the program: Hugh Feiss, OSB, Mary Forman, OSB, Joel Rippinger, OSB, Thomas Sullivan, OSB, Judith Sutera, OSB. Since the beginning of the program, Hugh Feiss has been the executive coordinator. The coordinator answers to the board and solicits their opinion before setting policies. The coordinator is responsible for record keeping, finances and publicity. |
